Reconstruction Library of AK Styria
Graz
The library was established in 1930 in the new building of the Styrian Chamber of Labour (architect: Hubert Gessner) and underwent two major reconstructions in 1969 and 2000/2001.
The current reconstruction improves the functionality, supplements the high-quality inventory with contemporary elements and creates a coherent and attractive atmosphere with a consistent color concept (which with its lively red-grey combination is reminiscent of the 1950s).
The most important innovation – at the suggestion of the architects – is the creation of barrier-free access for the library located on the 1st floor with an elevator. At the same time, the foyer with its elegant staircase in red terrazzo was upgraded by a motif wall designed by Bohatsch und Partner.
With the new guidance system and color concept, it was also possible to integrate the existing shelves into the redesign – in the sense of an economical use of resources.
Particularly inviting is the new lounge with upholstered bench, which complements the reading area and also guides the view into the greenery, into the adjacent Volksgarten.
